"The Howisons are a microcosm of the journey of many families to the 'new world' and the development of a great nation. From one 'younger son' (who in the 1700's in Scotland received no inheritance, the entire estate going to the oldest brother) issued a family that has played a part in the development of many parts of America from colonial times forward. A Howison raised the first American flag in the Oregon Territory, A Howison was the first Captain of the Battleship Oregon, the sister ship of the Battleship (remember the) Maine. Howisons were involved the California gold rush as well as in the Alaska gold rush. They developed agricultural enterprise. They were lawyers, ministers, educators, adventurers, soldiers, business men, farmers, slave owners, government employees, mathematicians, athletes, and undoubtedly a few scoundrels although we haven't found any in this work!

They have left their mark, their history is worth preserving."

... Allen P. Howison, Jr. 1929 - 2009
